Did you know April the 14th is Dolphin Appreciation Day.So I decided to appreciate dolphins by writing a informative report about them.Dolphins are one of the most intelligent animals in the world. Dolphins are also known to protect humans from shark attacks. Dolphins are mammals which are warm blooded creatures. Dolphins can be grey, pink, blue, black and white. There are almost 40 species of dolphin. Dolphins mostly eat fish including mullet, mackerel, herring and cod. Dolphins live in oceans and rivers all over the world.Dolphins vary in size from 1.2m and 40 kg up to 9.5 m and 10 tonnes. Dolphins natural enemies are Orcas, and large sharks like tiger sharks and bull sharks. The dolphin species that are found in New Zealand are the Maui dolphin, the Hector’s dolphin, the Killer whale/Orca, the Bottlenose dolphin, the Dusky dolphin, the short-beaked common dolphin and pilot whales. The Hector’s dolphin is only found in New Zealand and is one of the smallest dolphins in the world. When dolphins are born they have hair which is found on their rostrum which is the dolphin’s mouth. After a few weeks the hair falls out. Dolphins don’t drink water because most of the water they swim in is saltwater. Instead dolphins get all the water they need from the fish they eat. Dolphins can swim up to 260m below the surface of the ocean and they can stay up to 15 minutes under water but they can not breath underwater.
Dolphins use echolocation to navigate and find food. Echolocation is the use of high frequency sounds for navigating and finding food. Dolphins use echolocation because dolphins are colour blind which means they can’t see much colour.Dolphins are colour blind because in our eyes there are at least two different cones in our eyes but dolphins only have one cone so that is why dolphins are colour blind. Dolphins release a focused beam of clicking sounds and then listen to the echo. From this they can determine the object’s size, shape, distance, speed, direction and internal structure. Depending on the object, sound waves can enter beneath the surface therefore giving feedback and information of the internal structure of an object. Other animals that use echolocation are bats and toothed whales. Echolocation is extremely sensitive and allows dolphins to examine small objects hundreds of miles away.
Despite the name killer whale the Orca is actually the largest member of the dolphin family. Unfortunately Orcas eat or kill dolphins, baby seals, baby sea lions, baby sperm whales, penguins and turtles and humans. Orcas live all over the world in oceans. Orcas are powerful predators capable of killing prey much larger than humans, such as leopard seals and great white sharks. Most of the time Orcas don’t kill people. Even though Orcas are dolphins they don’t really act like dolphins. It is so sad that people think Orcas are evil geniuses because it’s not their fault they were developed like that so that is why I think Orcas are amazing. Also sharks are afraid of dolphins because because sharks like to eat animals that are smaller than them especially baby dolphins. Dolphins are smart so they’ve long figured it out, and since no animal or person would like to have their children eaten, whenever dolphins see a shark they will try to kill it. P.S. They usually succeed. That is why sharks are afraid of dolphins. I think my favourite species of dolphin is the Amazon River dolphin which is pink.
That is how I appreciated dolphins today!!!!!!!!
