Are cats that bad?
Don't you think cats are cute and sweet little fun creatures ? Because that's what i think and what most of you would think. But cats aren't just cute and sweet.they can hurt you by scratching or biting but they can do things even worse.not only to humans but to other animals too.cats can kill birds .and they can kill other animals like rats and mice too.But i this speech i’m going to talk about the birds that get killed by cats.cats can kill up to 1 million birds a year.cats catch up to 275 million prey items a year of which 55 million are birds.a cat is a common animal for a pet so a lot of people have a cat and think about how many birds would get killed a year.
cats also kill our native birds to.Cats have contributed to the extension of 9 native birds.people are trying to stop cats from killing our birds and people have invented things to help like catbib.catbib was invented by a bird-feeding,cat loving, gardner in springfield, oregon, after collars with bells didn’t work.catbib is something to put on your cats collar.it works because it be’s in the way of the cat so its not easy for the cat to catch a bird.or a another way to stop your cat from killing is to dress your cat up.Cats impact on 33 native birds spiecies.and around 40%of new zealand native land-birds are already extinct and of the ones remaining 37% are endangered
.According to someones study 21%of your cats victims are brought home 30% are eaten and 49% are left to rot.New Zealand is the last refuge of a huge range of bird species, we’re famous for our claim to be clean and green, and some of us have recognised the huge economic benefit, let alone the ecological dividend, from achieving a Predator Free New Zealand.
But the vision is flawed. Almost half of Kiwi households have a cat (or two) making New Zealanders one of the world’s biggest cat owners , Cats are incredibly effective hunters and are wiping out our native birds. And according someone’s study that cats have been responsible for the extension of 33 birds species worldwide. In our cities domestic cats kill native birds faster than they can possibly breed.“Domestic cats are companion for many people. However, they are predators, and given the chance, will hunt. Many of the animals caught by domestic cats around cities and towns are rodents or non-native birds.
Domestic cats, especially those living near native habitats, have been reported as catching native birds (including kereru, tui, fantails, grey warbler), reptiles (such as common skink and the rare gold-striped gecko) and native insects. It is difficult to estimate the scale of domestic cat predation on native species because domestic cats only bring home about 25% of their prey, the rest being eaten or left where it was caught.
“DOC supports responsible cat ownership and there are a few simple actions cat owners can do to help protect native wildlife.”
1 Don’t dump unwanted kittens, give them to the SPCA or have them put down.
2 If you live near an area with native wildlife, keep your pet well fed and indoors at night.
3 Attaching a bell to your cat’s collar can also help as it makes it harder for them to stalk silently.
so cat’s are a good friendly cute little pet but cat’s aren’t always good.sometimes they can be really bad.thank you for listening to my speech.
